A Mother's Longing

I longed to walk life’s road with you,
But we came to disagree.
I so desired a close-knit bond
Till eye to eye we could not see.
We parted ways and spent our days
Drifting farther apart.
We’d get together here and there,
But slowly I’d lost your heart.
How this transpired I wonder now.
And can a heart be won?
Tis given, I think and freely so
If this deed is truly done.
Yet no matter how far we drift apart
My heart reaches across the way
It’s a pulling apart that I cannot bear.
A longing I cannot stay.
For from the very first day I held you close
A part of my heart was given.
So this longing to walk life’s road with you
Will linger til I reach heaven.
